Champion for Coaches, Visionary Leader, Tireless Advocate
The Confederation of Australian Sport (CAS) and the Australian Coaching Council (ACC) join together in mourning the passing of Walt Missingham — a passionate, dedicated advocate for coaching and community sport in Australia.
Walt served as Chair of the revitalised Australian Coaching Council from 2017 to 2024, leading with vision, energy and determination during a critical period for the coaching landscape in Australia. Under his stewardship, the ACC was re-established following the Australian Sports Commission’s decision in 2017 to retire the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS) and National Officiating Accreditation Scheme (NOAS).
In response, Walt rallied a committed group of professionals to form an independent industry body under the ACC banner. With Walt at the helm, the Council worked tirelessly to rebuild a support structure that honoured the essential role coaches and officials play in Australian sport. His leadership focused not just on accreditation, but on education, development, welfare and recognition of those who guide athletes at all levels.
Walt’s vision for the Australian Coaching Council was grounded in principles of:
Respected and independent representation
National leadership and advocacy
Championing the vital contributions of coaches and officials
Prioritising their wellbeing and professional development
Offering technical and educational support through innovative course and resource development
Responding to the evolving needs of Australian sport with integrity and purpose
Walt Missingham leaves behind a lasting legacy built on service, leadership, and unwavering dedication to Australian sport. His impact will continue to be felt through the countless coaches, officials, and athletes whose lives were enriched by his work.
The thoughts of CAS, ACC, and the broader sporting community are with Walt’s family, friends, and colleagues at this time.
